Fetal Alcohol Screening (FASD)

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) refers to a range of problems caused by exposure of a baby to alcohol during pregnancy. Children born with FASD can experience challenges with their learning and behaviour.  While there is no cure for FASD, if the condition is discovered early there are a range of things that can be done to help the child to maximise their independence and achievements as they grow into adulthood.

Research shows that any level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy can result in lifelong damage to a baby. In some cases, women do not know they are pregnant for months after conception and may consume alcohol with may result in the child being born with FASD.

The effects of alcohol on a baby during pregnancy include:

  • harm to the development of the babies' nervous system, including the brain

  • under-nourishment of the growing baby

  • in some cases, triggering of changes in the development of the baby’s face, resulting in certain facial features.

Not all babies exposed to alcohol develop FASD. The risk of harm to the baby is highest when prenatal exposure to alcohol occurs regularly.

The Colly Hub is the headquarters of Australia's first community-led FASD Screening Service for rural and remote babies.  The service is staffed by local people who are trained to identify characteristics often associated with a child who may have FASD.

Importantly, if a preliminary diagnosis is made the program will pay for your baby to go to the Sydney Children' Hospital for more detailed assessment to provide you with a formal diagnosis.  If a formal diagnosis of FASD is made, your baby or child will have access to world-leading treatment and services from the CICADA Centre at the Sydney Hospital Network.

We know that deciding to have your child screened for FASD can be difficult for many parents.  Our staff include both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal professionals.  Our goal is to place the health of your child and family at the forefront, and to ensure access to life changing care that will improve the outcomes for your child into the future.

Because we are community-led, our priority is to look after you!
